A Wedding Doubleheader

My great grandparents, George Dallas Hill and Edith (Sterling) Hill got married on 21 January 1916 at 7pm in Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware.1 And again at 8pm in Bear, New Castle County Delaware (maybe 15 miles away).2

Extracts from both marriage certificates for George Dallas Hill and Edith (Sterling) Hill.

They have two marriage certificates from the State of Delaware. Both have the same names for the couple – George D/Dallas Hill, of Wilmington Delaware, age 23 and Edith Sterling, also of Wilmington, age 21. Their birth information is essentially the same: George was born in Del. or New Castle Co. Del to Harry B. Hill and Mary C. Walker; Edith was born in Del. or Clayton, Del. to Frank Sterling and Sara/Sarah E/Ella Jones.

Same people, two ceremonies.

Aside from the time and place, the certificates also show different officiants and witnesses. The first ceremony was officiated by J.J. McKenna, a Priest, witnessed by a B.J. Houghton and Winifred Horan (perhaps friends?). The second ceremony was performed by J.M. Lindale, a Minister of the Gospel and witnessed by Frank, S. Ella, and Frances Sterling (Edith’s father, mother, and sister).

Why two separate ceremonies? Someone wanted a Priest in Wilmington, and someone else didn’t? Why compromise on wedding plans when you can have two different ceremonies on the same day?

It was a surprise when I found these two certificates, and we don’t know what actually went on. But I’d love to hear the story behind it…
